Abstract
This study is about politeness in the conversation used by the tour guide during guiding the guest. The conversation covers some points namely: greeting, introduction to the guest, offering help, dealing the price, explaining the tourist object. The politeness analysis was done by using maxim theory. Maxim theory was used to reveal the flouting maxim were being formed by the guide in the conversation during handling the guest. This study applied qualitative approach. The data was taken from conversation between guides and the foreign guest in the tourist object, namely in Ubud. The conversation was being transcribed and analyzed by categorizing utterances based on the flouting of maxim theory proposed by H.P. Grice. It was found that during the conversation, all speakers tend to flout the conversation. There are Sorts of maxim that were flouted by speaker, they were maxim of quantity, quality and manner. The flout of maxim was done by the tour guides because of their lack of language and grammatical competence.
