Abstract

Self-image is an individual appraisal on the size, shape, appearance and function of body. Patients with breast cancer experience alteration in their breast as a result of the cancer. The breast is an important organ for woman. This research aimed at exploring the self-image of patients with breast cancer in Surgical Oncology Polyclinic, Sanglah Hospital. This research implemented descriptive, cross-sectional design. The data were collected by using a questionnaire. There were 76 respondents involved in this study and selected through non-probability sampling, the total sampling. Univariate analysis showed that 39 post-mastectomy respondents (81.2%) had a positive self-image and 9 post-mastectomy respondents (18.8%) had negative self-image (mean = 25.81). The analysis results of patients with no mastectomy showed that 23 respondents (82.1%) had a positive self-image and 5 respondents (17.9%) had a negative self-image (mean = 26.57). In general, the majority of patients with breast cancer have a positive self-image (81.6%) and only 14 respondents (18.4%) have a negative self-image
