Abstract

Digital social innovation is an emerging field that use digital tools for social change in order to solve a variety of issues in many areas such as education, health and environment. In the area of environment for example, digital innovations could be developed to help the society to dispose and collect recyclable waste in an appropriate way. From our survey on the waste disposal in Malaysia however, we have found that there is no digital application available for the society to properly dispose and collect the household recyclable waste. This study aims to design a digital solution for the society in order to provide them with a mobile application that could be used to track content level of recycling bins in their locations. The application is developed based on Rapid Application Development (RAD) methodology and run on Android platform. At the end of the study, we propose and discuss a model that we have developed for the solution, which could also be applied by other society to achieve the same goal. We conclude that an affordable digital social solution could be implemented by leveraging the current open source tools, low-cost hardware, crowdsourcing and cloud technologies.
