Abstract

The object of this study is to obtain an overall picture and deep understanding of Wolio language maintenance at Buton society in Baubau city, South East Sulawesi. The observations of the research of preservation of language focus on domain of usage at five domains: (i) family and neighborhood, (ii) work environment (office), (iii) informal meeting (marriage), (iv) school environment (elementary school), and (v) worship (mosque). The research approach used qualitative approach adopting the methods of ethnography and Spradleys models. The Data were collected through participant observation, interviews, recording, and document study. The result of the data analysis and interpretation indicate that the level of Wolio language density was (58.51%), the category of less maintained. Based on these findings, it can be concluded that Wolio language will be heading to extinction if no efforts are made with the language inheritance.
