Abstract
Dry extract of binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) has been known to have several pharmacological activities, one of those is antidiabetic and has been developed as alternative medicine. Making the dry extract by adding fillers could shorten the drying time and increase the shelf life of extract. This study is aimed to determine the type and ratio of fillers to the characteristics of binahong dry extract, thus the optimum formula is obtained using response surface methodology. The fillers which is used include corn starch, amprotab, microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) 102, dextrin, lactose, and maltodextrin. The results showed that the ratio of extract : MCC : amprotab 1 : 0.5322: 0.9978 was the optimum formula of binahong dry extract. Appearance of binahong dry extract was dark green to brown dry powder with characteristic odor and bitter taste. The characterization results include loss of drying of 8.36% ± 0.14%, water content 6.42% ± 0.42%, angle of repose 12.14° ± 1.63°, and total phenolic content 1.83% ± 0.30%. From the results of the study, it can be concluded that the combination of MCC and amprotab provides good characteristics of binahong dry extract with optimum total phenolic content. The prototype of binahong dry extract which has been characterized could be combined with other extract, which are expected to be an alternative treatment and also increase its pharmacological activity.
