WOMEN-S EXPERIENCE IN CONTINUITY OF MIDWIFERY CARE IN DEVELOPED COUNTRY: A SYSTEMATIC LITERATURE REVIEW

Abstract

Background: Continuity of midwifery care is a treatment that starts in early pregnancy and continues to delivery until six weeks after delivery. Continuity of care is very important for women to get services from the same midwife or one team of midwives. This is to monitor the development of womens conditions at all times. On the other hand, the women will trust and open to the caregivers because they already know them. This study aims to find out women-s experience in continuity of midwifery care and their experience when they were referred from primary to secondary health services. Methods: This Systematic Literature Review employed database from PubMed, Proquest and Sciencedirect during 2007-2018. There were 549 initial articles identified. Eight (8) articles that fitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria were selected for final review. Result: Two sub-themes that discussed womens experiences in continuity of midwifery care were interpersonal relationships between the woman and the midwife and togetherness. Nine sub-themes discuss women-s experience when they were referred from primary to secondary services were ideal delivery, disappointment to referral decisions, anxiety, referral travel, autonomy, handover, the presence of midwives, non-continuous care and collaboration between health workers. Conclusion: Continuous midwifery care from the early pregnancy to postpartum contributed to a positive birth experience for women. In the case of referral from primary to secondary facilities, the women expected to receive continuous care.
