Abstract
This study aims to find the roots of weakening social capital in a community that has the potential to develop. The study was conducted through qualitative approach in a village inhabited by a group of communal people. It was found that communal life that had been lived for generations made people live in a strong kinship with an egalitarian spirit. However, when the era is more modern there was a cultural shock because people began to find that their neighbors could be more prosperous than they were. Inevitably this will cause jealousy. As a result, the potential for kinship that should have been able to become social capital vanished. During this time the weakening of social capital is usually associated with the formal institutions that play a role in it. However, this article found that jealousy and spiritual identity crisis can also weaken social capital in a village.
