THE ILLOCUTIONARY ACTS IN THE RECEPTIONISTS- CONVERSATION OF LUMBINI LUXURY VILLAS AND SPA

Abstract

The title of this writing is The Illocutionary Acts Found in Receptionists Conversations at Lumbini Luxury Villas and Spa. This writing concerns with kinds illocutionary acts and the functions used by receptionists conversations at Lumbini Luxury Villas and Spa, Jimbaran. The main theory applied in this writing is illocutionary acts taken from the book entitled How to do Things with Words by Austin J.L. (1962). The supporting theory is taken from the book of Kent Bach and Robert M. Harnish. Entitled Linguistic Communication and Speech Act (1979). Beside those theories, some of theories that are relevant to the topic are also used in this writing. In collecting the data, the writer used field writing technique method of video recording and voice recording. The data collected then analyze based on the scope of discussion. The data analyzed by according to their functions and the kinds of illocutionary act found in the receptionists conversation with the guests. Based on the result of the analysis, it can be concluded that there are four kinds of illocutionary acts appears in those conversation with the guests. The kinds of illocutionary acts, such as: commissive appears in 10 examples, constative appears in 8 examples, directive appears in 11 examples, and acknowledgement appears in 4 examples. The expressions that are appears in the conversation are greeting, thanking, apologizing, giving information, description, suggesting, asking question, offering, and promising.
