Abstract

In this increasingly competitive 21st century global economy, it is necessary for students to have adequate skills to cope with demands of 21st century. This quasi-experiment research aims to get an overview of how to train 21st century skills by applying inquiry-project based learning with reading infusion strategy. The participants are 121 students, randomly picked from 288 students at one of the senior high schools in West Bandung district. The development of 21st century skills was measured using rubric adopted and adapted from Boss. The analysis used standards developed by Lati, which have been tested through inter-rater reliability technique with reliability value 0.67. The result shows that in experiment class, collaboration and communication skills can increase to “good” level. However, critical and creative thinking skills are still in “fair” level. While in control class, collaboration and communication skills can increase to “fair” level. But critical and creative thinking skills are declining to “very poor” level. Based on the results, it appears that inquiry project-based learning with reading infusion can help improving the development of certain 21st century skills. Lazy-to-read habit that students do still becomes an obstacle, therefore more appropriate ways are still needed in developing 21st century skills.
