Abstract

XLPE insulation material is very commonly used in electrical cable industry. Due to the highly level flammability of XLPE which have low value of Limiting Oxygen Index (LOI) between 18-19% make this material requires improvement. Antimony trioxide (Sb2O3) is very commonly used as a flame retardant additive in PVC material, will be used to increase the LOI value of XLPE. By applying the composition of Sb2O3 with the variation of 2%, 4% and 6%, we found that the LOI value increased to up to 22%. The negative effects should be aware because we also found that addition of Sb2O3 on XLPE materials led to a decrease in the value of the electrical resistivity by 1 order.
