Abstract

The consumption of iron supplement is one of the efforts to prevent anemia among female teenagers. Adequate knowledge and attitude are key factors for iron supplementation. This study aimed to determine the effect of providing health education on the level of knowledge and attitudes of female teenagers on the consumption of iron supplement. A pre-experimental design with one group pretest posttest approach was employed in this study. Samples consisted of 42 students grade ten in Vocational High School SMK Negeri 1 Tabanan, selected using stratified random sampling technique. The data were collected by using questionnaire of knowledge and attitude which were self-developed by the researcher and analyzed by using the Wilcoxon sign rank test. Age of the respondents ranged from 15-16 years. Wilcoxon Signed Rank Test revealed a statistically significant increase in knowladge and attitudes after receiving education. On the domain of knowledge, z = -5.687, p<0.001, r = 0.62, median score increased from pre-program (Md = 14) to post-program (Md = 20). On the domain of attitudes, z = -5.652, p<0.001, r = 0.61, median score increased from pre-program (Md = 28) to post-program (Md = 39). There is an influence of the provision of health education on the knowledge and attitudes of female adolescent about the consumption of iron supplement at Vocational High School SMK Negeri 1 Tabanan.
