Because English has a significant role in the development of Indonesia, the importance of mastering English is no longer something debatable. Nowadays, it has become a need instead of a must. Duration in learning English also increases in formal school. However, the lessons learned are not well preserved in their minds. It can be proven by studying English for years, the students still have low competence and performance in English. The aim of the research was to find out how teachers teach English and how students learn English in schools. The data were taken in selected public secondary schools in Makassar with observation and semi-structured in-depth interviews with students and teachers. In this present research, pure descriptive analysis was used both in collecting and analyzing the data. The most interesting findings is speaking is the most rarely trained in the class, which leads students to feel difficult to speak.
