Examination of Student Who Solving the Algebra Task in Middle School

Abstract

Algebra is an essential topic in learning mathematics. It is a tool for solving the problem in the related phenomenon in our world. Algebra gives the students how to think systematically and coherently. In another hand, students are difficulties while explaining the algebra aspect. For that reason, we try to examine how and why the students have problems in learning algebra. Particular aspects it will continue to discuss that is concept equality, the equal sign, and variable. The method was chosen from this study is a qualitative method then the analysis by using description. This study shows that most students cannot solve the problem equality because they cannot understand the meaning of the equal sign. Then in the variable, students cannot examine the distributive role, they are incorrect while substituting.
