Abstract

Audiovisual Translation or AVT is a kind of translation characterized by the interaction of text (whether oral or written) with sound and image. One prominent example of an audiovisual translation is film translation. The preferred method of translation depends on the tradition of target language, genre, and other kind of tv programs in a country. In the Philippines, dubbing is the most used in recording an AVT. The translation of tv shows and films was prominent in the Philippines that was accepted by the Filipinos. This paper aims to determine and analyze the process in dubbing films from one language to another. In this case, from english to filipino language. Qualitative design was used in this study while indigenous method was used in determining a production team as informant. Creativoices Production was chosen because based on research they are the top production team who does dubbing of films in the country. Concept of Multimodality and Skopos Theory are used as the theoretical framework of the study. The process of dubbing in the Philippines is consist of a.) production formation, b.) translation of script, c.) voice talent selection, d.) actual dubbing session, e.) editing and revising, and f.) screening. The work of the translator does not only end in the process of translating the script. Hence, his work is very vital towards the very end of the process. Unlike any other kinds of translation where one must be faithful to the text, a translator in AVT does not only focus on the script. One must consider other semiotic resources found in the film just like the video itself (actions or movements in the film), and the audio (voice talents). A series of adjustment was made most especially to the words and dialogs in the film. Therefore, AVT is a collaborative work- the translator as the one who does in translating the script, the voice talent who renders the dialog in a film, and the sound engineer whose responsible for technicalities.
