Disaster Resilient Village Empowerment in the Coastal Area of Ngliyep Beach, Southern Malang, East Java, Indonesia

Abstract

A study entitled disaster resilient village empowerment in the coastal area of Ngliyep beach, Southern Malang, East Java, Indonesia has been conducted. This study was aimed for community service activity to foster awareness of the people who live in the Ngliyep coastal area in order to give understanding about the potential of natural disasters in the area where they live. Henceforth, local communities are expected to be ready to face these natural disasters and understand what needs to be done in mitigating these natural disasters potential. The study was implemented by mapping the natural disasters potential in the locations using the reference of general guidelines for disaster resilient villages (regulation of the Head of the National Disaster Management Agency No. 1 of 2012) and the village disaster resilience assessment. The assessment was carried out based on 5 components and 26 indicators. Component 1 (quality and access of basic service) consists of 9 indicators, component 2 (disaster management basic system) consists of 7 indicators, component 3 (disaster risk management) consists of 2 indicators, component 4 (emergency preparedness) consists of 6 indicators, and component 5 (recovery preparedness) consists of 2 indicators. The assessment of village resilience is derived from the combined value of all indicators. The combined value based on the weight of each component gives the level of village resilience, with the criteria: Main disaster resilient village (for value >50), intermediate disaster resilient village (for value in the range of 35-50), and Primary disaster resilient village (for value <35).
