Breast Self-Examination or BSE is always thought to be done by most women only and even breast cancer is thought to be diagnosed only in women. However, men are also susceptible to breast cancer and also need to perform BSE. The increase of incidence of breast cancer and cancer deaths in the Philippines makes it an alarming concern and thus in need of an immediate intervention. Moreover, this study assessed the level of awareness on BSE and breast cancer, and its compliance to perform BSE. Stratified random sampling was used to gather a total of 300 respondents both male and female students of Mindanao State University - Iligan Institute of Technology. A modified questionnaire was used to assess the respondent awareness, and its compliance to perform BSE, a checklist was also given to find out if the respondent is doing BSE the right way. Statistical Analysis though frequency and percentage, showed results that seventy seven percent (77%) of the respondents have an average level of awareness regarding BSE and breast cancer. In addition to, Female respondents are more knowledgeable about breast self-examination and breast cancer. Furthermore, seventy four percent (74%) does not comply in performing BSE, female respondents reported that they do not know how to do it properly while the male respondents find it unnecessary to perform the procedure. Compliance rating is very low to those who are performing BSE, however this was done incorrectly. In line with these results, the need for adequate health education programs on breast cancer and the implementation of educational campaigns targeting schools and universities to demonstrate proper way to do BSE among men and women can greatly improve their level of awareness and compliance rating.
