Abstract

Scientific literacy is an important ability for all teachers, but research on scientific literacy for non-science major prospective teachers is rarely. This study aims to obtain essential indicators of scientific literacy for non-science major prospective teachers. This research is a qualitative study, with the focus group discussion (FGD) method. The FGD panel was selected from literacy experts (scientific, linguistic, numerical) and education experts. The instrument is an initial question sheet to the panelists, which then develops in the discussion. Data were analyzed qualitatively, with the stages of data reduction and taxonomy. The results of the study show that the non-science major teacher candidates still need scientific literacy skills. This ability is mainly in the aspect of attitude (the willingness to follow the development of science) and the epistemic aspects of scientific literacy. The subjects that can be used to improve this ability are mainly Basic Natural Sciences and other relevant subjects.

Keywords: scientific literacy, non-science major prospective teacher.
