Abstract

Jejangkit village in South Kalimantan is a peat land area which is mostly used for agriculture. The average annual peat paddy harvest is once a year, where during the 8 mons planting season there is a 4-month gap caused by low tide. This condition is a period of unemployment because most of its citizens are farmers. In addition to farming, the community in the Jejangkit village has a desire to plant fish and raise fresh fish such as catfish, but the problem faced by the community in the local area is that the area is very prone to flooding when it rains. Another problem is the level of water acidity in the area, where these conditions are quite difficult for the community to garden and raise freshwater fish. Therefore the solution offered to solve this problem is the use of an aquaponics system with a combination of water filtering for the normalization of water PH, so that in addition to fish farming can run properly and also agriculture can be run even though the area is flooding. The application of aquaponics technology with a combination of water filtering, aquaculture and plantations can be realized which can increase income for residents who want to develop independent businesses both managed by the community and by individuals. This is considered important because by looking at the unemployment period of 4 months, it is felt very necessary to manage an independent business that has long-term potential. One way to develop fisheries is with a semi-rubber tarpaulin pool formed like a drum with an iron frame, while solutions for plantations can be solved by applying aquaponics. Aquaponic system, which is a combination of hydroponics and aquaculture systems that are mutually symbiotic (Rakocy et al., 2006, Diver, 2006). Plantations using the aquaponics system can be done on both narrow and wide land, plants do not need to be watered and fertilized, pool water does not need to be replaced, environmentally friendly and can be done by all members of the community. Based on these advantages, the aquaponics system is a suitable solution for plantations and fisheries in swamp and peat areas. In addition the aquaponics system can also be used as additional income, because of the nature of aquaponics which is simple, practical and easy to do by all groups without special expertise.
