Abstract

The outbreak of the bloodshed in Marawi City has displaced nearly 500,000 people. The survivors have sought shelter in evacuation centers in nearby municipalities in Lanao del Sur and Lanao del Norte including Iligan City. This war caused distress and may even increase for a period after the exposure to stressful to this event may continue for quite a few persons many years after. In this kind of conflict, people are the most vulnerable but are affecting children the most. Exposure to this conflict causes trauma to children which cannot be expressed verbally but through expression of nonverbal gestures and visual arts. And the best way to provide psychological support is through art-based intervention which is the goal of this study. The qualitative and quantitative data was gathered at Maria Cristina Evacuation Center in Iligan City. The stress level of the respondents shows that they have problem in their emotional aspect. The mean shows that they do not have difficulties in Pro social, hyperactivity, peer, and conduct problem. The mean (X=5.43) of art based intervention questionnaire shows that the respondents have positive feeling in the activity in which they are confident, playful, excited, and pleased in the activity. They were neutrally competent and they were not averse joining the activity. The t-test has shown that stress level and art based intervention have a significant relationship which means that there art based intervention reduces stress. Majority of the drawings are houses that signifies the aftermath of war- houses are being destroyed and ruined and as a result, they need a new house to live. The study recommends assessing the stress level before and after the activity. Future researchers as well as therapists may improve the study by providing therapeutic setting in doing this activity and adding more materials that will help the children express themselves even more.
