Fraction interpretation of pre-service mathematics teachers

Abstract

Fractions are mathematical concepts that are much applied in mathematics topic. Interpretation of fractions in a topic can be different with others topic. Fractions interpretation is an important thing to be understood by pre-service mathematics teachers. Their interpretation can influence their teaching. To investigate their interpretations of fractions, we asked 35 pre-service mathematics teachers to interpret 4/5. The results showed that only 19 participants in the study could interpret fractions as part of whole, quotient, and ratio. There are not participanst which interpret fraction as operator and measures. These results indicate that although pre-service mathematics teachers often use fractions in mathematics topic since elementary school to university, their interpretation of fractions is still incomplete.
