Community Engagement Activities and Communication Strategy as an Effort to Conserve of Water Springs

Abstract

This paper aims to identify community activities in the community engagement program and to analyze the communication strategies that have been carried out by villagers in Umbul Damar of Blitar Regency to conserve water springs. The research method used is qualitative. The combination of in-depth interviews, partisan field observations, and documentation is the data collection technique. While the data analysis technique uses descriptive-qualitative analysis techniques. The purposive sampling technique is used by selecting representatives of community members who are members of environmental groups, tourism conscious groups, village government officials, and spring water resource managers. The results of this study show that there were at least five local community activities in Umbul Damar Village that supported the preservation of springs which had a dual function as a tourist attraction such as accommodating water sources in an organized and participatory management system; joint community service around the springs environment; providing certain appeals and prohibitions for politeness, safety, comfort, and environmental sustainability; maintaining the customs and culture of the community in the environment of the spring; and preserving and preserving local legends and myths that contain mystical elements. The study also shows that there were three main communication strategies concerning local community communication such as word of mouth through regular villagers meeting and informal meeting known as cangkrukan. This study finds that cultural performance and events were conducted and organized by the headman of Umbul Damar to attract villagers attention and interest in protecting springs. The medium of communication such as local Radio Station and Social Media platform such as Whatsapp group were used to share information and to educate the villagers about spring preservation.
