This research aims at describing and analyzing linguistic deviations in the lyrics of kabhanti, an oral literature expressed by people of Munanese in South East Sulawesi, Indonesia. Kabhanti is a-two or four-line traditional verse that chanted in daily life as well as in performance of kabhanti in front of audience. The main constraint to comprehend the symbolic lyrics of kabhanti although by indigenous people is the use of language in the lyrics that rather different from the conventional use in daily communication. As a poetic language, the sense of aesthetic absolutely exists in the lyrics that achieved through linguistic deviations. Three items from eight categories of linguistic deviations introduced by Geoffrey N. Leech: phonological, grammatical, and semantic deviations are the means to explore the achievement of the sense of aesthetic in the lyrics of kabhanti. Data of kabhanti were taken from the people who had adequate experiences in performing kabhanti. The achieved data were analyzed by applying a contrastive analysis technique. Through the analysis, the accentric use of language in the lyrics of kabhanti by breaking the language rules made the lyrics were more aesthetic than the conventional one.
