Abstract

Sumatra Island is one of the largest island in the Southeast Asia that has been inhabited by humans since at least 12,000 BP. Archaeological findings at several sites from the western to eastern in the island of Sumatra proved that the occupational chronology or occupancy process of the island of Sumatra has been going on since thousands of years ago. The period of occupation and adaptation to the surrounding environment has given rise to a variety of cultural artifacts, one of that in the field of fine arts. Chronologically, prehistoric art is considered by experts as the birth place of art itself and the initial stage of the series of changes in long art forms, from prehistory to the classical Hindu-Buddhist period, and then back to Islamic era. The long journey of art in Malay Jambi certainly gave a variety of morphologies or forms that are likely to have similarities with the previous era, or just the opposite and then it becomes a research problem; how is the variety of form or the morphology of art from prehistoric times to Islam? Are there any similarities, or differences? The archeological method is used as research method, so that from the field data it can be identified and classified the morphology of the fine arts and the stages of their change over time. A temporary hypothesis from this study shows that there is a unified form, or art morphology, apparently, but there are differences in the use of art media.
