DOES SOCIOECONOMIC STATUS IMPACT ON STUDENTS LEARNING

Abstract

Students socioeconomic status is commonly argued as one factor which may impact on students learning performance. This article reports a study investigating the effect of socioeconomic status (SES) on high school students performance as they study English as a foreign language (EFL) subject in school. In this study, besides the social economic status of parents, parental and family influences as well as social orientation were also measured. One hundred forty-four students from two different high schools participated in the self-reported questionnaire. The high schools were purposely chosen in order to cover different range of socioeconomic status. Findings showed that to some extent, socio economic status and parents influence played a significant role to be successful in learning English.
