Abstract
The purpose of this study is to determine the principalsupervision strategy in improving teachers performance at Madrasah Tsanawiyah Al-Muslimin in Tebing Tinggi. This studyused qualitative research methods. The data obtained based on observations, interviews, and documentation. The research has drawn the followingresult; Principal have not provided diverse strategies in supervising teachers, teachers performance in MadrasahTsanawiyah Al Muslimin is very dependent on the supervision of the principal, and supervision in MadrasahTsanawiyah Al-Muslimin has not been carried out properly. In this study, a suitable supervision strategy to improve teachers performance is very important to be carried out at MadrasahTsanawiyah Al-Muslimin. The finding of this studyindicates supervision strategy used by the principal improve teachers performance.

Abstract
Debate is a method of interactive argument by speakers and listeners should be ensure the meaning from communication can be delivered properly. It means that they must have a goood intentionally to be shared information by one speakers with another. The phenomena when people do not follow the rules of cooperative principle is called flouting maxim. People will be missunderstanding in conversation while the utterences of people is difficult to be understood. By implying meaning from people can not be accepted by listeners and can be the problem in flouting maxim. In this research the objective of this study is to find out the types of flouting maxim by candidates governor of North Sumatera in election debate 2018. This study will use the types of flouting maxim proposed by Joan Cutting, Such as flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of manner and flouting maxim of relevance. The source of the data of this study will be gathered by youtube channel and the data will be sentences and phrase that contains of flouting maxim. This study will apply descriptive qualitative.

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the types of arguments produced by male and female participants in instagram. The objectives of the study is to describe the types of argument occurring in instagram about Donald Trump Political Status. The data in this study are thirty texts of arguments; fifteen arguments from male and the others fifteen arguments from female. The data were selected in one month. This research was conducted by applying qualitative descriptive research. Types of argument analysis by using Barwise theory showed that male instagram participant tend to use conjunction, negation, conditional, and disjunction to convey their argument in instagram while female instagram participants tend to use negation, conjunction and conditional in instagram.

Abstract
Teaching learning process is an activity that aimed to transfer the lesson to the students that means the teachers as the senders of the message and the students mostly as the listeners. The teachers transform the knowledge in class by using words, phrases, clause and sentences. it will be interaction of the teachers and the students. When the teachers talk in front of the class, the modality as the sub topic of systemic functional linguistic must be used in the inteaction. Modality is used by the teachers to express the willingness, necessity and etc. But sometimes, teachers can not decide the suitable modality used in teaching learning process. In line with this idea, the objective of this study is to find out the types of modality applied in teaching learning process. This study will use the types of modality proposed by Halliday (2004) : Modalization and modulation. The source of the data of this study will be gathered by the teachers and students interactions and the data will be words and phrase that contains of modality. This study will apply descriptive qualitative.

Abstract
This research was carried out to investigate the modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The objective of the research was to describe the types of modality used in beauty product advertisements on Instagram caption. The data of this research was the clauses consisting of modality used in beauty product advertisements which are taken from official account of three local brands on Instagram. Descriptive qualitative method was used in this research. The instrument of this research was observation. The types of modality are analyzed by using the theory of Carrettero (2007). In this research was found four types of modality. The types were found in this research, namely Epistemic, Deontic, Dynamic and Boulomaic.

Abstract
This research dealt with the common phenomena unnatural translations in public signs of tourist resorts in Parapat and Bukit Lawang. The objectives of this study is to find out the unnatural Indonesian-English translation of public signs at the two tourist resorts (Parapat and Bukit Lawang). This research applied qualitative research design. The data were collected through observation by taking pictures. The findings of this study showed that There are only five grounds unnatural translation found both in Parapat ad Bukit Lawang

THE USE OF ANTI-LANGUAGE TO IMPROVE THE ABILITY OF ELEMENTARY STUDENTS OF GRADE 5 IN UNDERSTANDING THE ENGLISH GRAMMAR Mery Silalahi Universitas Sari Mutiara Indonesia mery.silalahi@yahoo.com ABSTRACT Learning English as a foreign language, making English lessons to be a difficult lesson to understand, coupled with grammar which is complicated and far different from our mother tongue, Indonesian language. The formulation patterns found in grammar usually must be memorized by students, but most students memorize only just to be able to answer the questions of the English lessons. Formulations on English grammar usually form a monotonous pattern that is difficult to memorize. The activity of changing the formulas found in English grammar into unique and funny words, sentences, and also abbreviations will form an anti-language that can be created by students in accordance with the creativity of each student. This study aims to study the anti-language influence on the ability of the elementary students of grade 5 in understanding English grammar. The population of this study is the elementary students of grade 5 SD Asisi Medan. This study will be an experimental study with a control group and intervention where the use of anti-language methods was conducted on the intervention group but in the control group will not be given any treatment. Data collection will use pretest and posttest which will be done to the intervention group and the control group. The data obtained were analyzed using univariate analysis and independent T-test.

Abstract
Internet has been used globally in almost every aspects of life. It helps people to do better and faster. Especially in education, internet is known as the golden key to intelligence. Not only as learning media in the classroom, it even can be useful for self-learning. On internet, English is used as a tool of communication; language of the instructions and language of the users. Considering the growth of its use in Indonesia, it is interesting to analyze how internet helps students master English. This study uses qualitative method to analyze the use of internet as learning media to master English as a foreign language by students of English Education Study Program Universitas Potensi Utama. It is to help students be aware of the technology in their hands and to use it wisely. Specifically, their involvement in social media applications is fascinating to be discussed. Their opinion about internet is also needed to map the use of internet itself. The result of this study shows that internet is used as entertainment and learning media by the students. The fact that internet offers an unlimited access to knowledge is utilized by most of them. The most used application they use to learn English is dictionary and social media.

Abstract
The aim of this research is for knowing the effect of learning model and learning motivation on French learning outcomes. The learning model used in this research are Project Based-Learning and Contextual Teaching and Learning. The research method was quasi-experimental study using factorial 2 x 2 designs. The population consisted of 280 students in the second grade of public senior high school in Medan in the second semester 2018-2019 academic year and the sample consisted of 66 students. The technique of data analysis used is ANOVA two ways. The conclusion of the research shows that: there is effect between students French learning outcomes which is taught using Project Based-Learning with Contextual Teaching and Learning. The learning outcomes of French taught by using Project Based-Learning is higher than the learning outcomes of French taught by using Contextual Teaching and Learning, there is an effect between students French learning outcomes who have higher learning motivation and the lower ones, that there is interaction between learning model and learning motivation to French learning results

Abstract
ABSTRACT This qualitative descriptive research deals with The Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Talk Show Program. This research observe the Use of Pronoun in Strategy of Politeness In Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program in some episode. The objectives of this study were to find out the types of politeness strategies are used in personal subject pronoun by the interviewees in Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) Talk Show Program, and to investigate politeness strategies used the personal subject pronoun. The data were taken from the episode of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program in 2018 years. The data were collected by downloading the video of Indonesia Lawyer Club Talk Show Program from youtube and then were transcribed. The data were analyzed by qualitative research based on interactive model which is created by Miles and Huberman. The result of the research shown the positive and negative politeness are used in Indonesia Lawyer Club ( ILC) by the same person. The same speaker and the same hearer used the politeness dynamically. It depends on topics/ issue whereas they understand or not in otherhand they expert in the material.

Abstract
This study aims to determine the values of achievement that exist in the traditional Gayo horse racing sport. Because during this time the horse race was only considered as peoples entertainment, which was initially held at the edge of the laut tawar lake of Takengon to enliven the success of the rice harvest. This research is a descriptive qualitative research conducted in Bener Meriah, Aceh. The samples in this study were the tourism department of Bener Meriah, Horse Owner, and Horse Race Jockey amount of 12 people. The method of data collection is done by observation, interviews, and documentation. Then the data obtained were analyzed by qualitative analysis with non statistical descriptive analysis. The results of the research show that the achievement values contained in the horse racing competition are carried out traditionally. Like a jockey must has a strong mentality and must also has high motivation to help support jockeys achievements to the best result. The main goal is not only the victory gained at the racetrack, but the important thing is to strive to achieve victory well. The struggle to achieve victory in a healthy way, does not justify everything for a victory to achieve goals achievement. To achieve an achievement must apply sports values such as sportsmanship, honesty, and responsibility in carrying out the training process provided.

The objectives of the research is to find out and describe the sentences by the the first grade students. The subject of the research is 16 students of the first grade students at SD Negeri 112131 Rantauprapat. This research was focus to the kinds of sentences that always uttered in communication based on Greenbaum and Nelson (2002). They are declarative sentences, interrogative sentences, imperative sentence and exclamation sentences. Descriptive qualitative was used in this research. The instrument of this research was observation by recording using mobile phone.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Helfi Vinawari S, Toba Batak Language Shift in Rantau Selatan. A Thesis. Postgraduate School, English Applied Linguistics Study Program. State University of Medan. 2019. This study observed Toba Batak Language Shift in Rantau Selatan. The objectives of the study were to answer the research problems under study that are (1) to describe the level of maintenance of the Toba Batak language in Rantau Selatan district. (2) to elaborate how the shift realized in their linguistic repertoire across language domain in Rantau Selatan district. (3) to explain the reasons why the language shift occur in the ways they do in Rantau Selatan district. The method of this study was qualitative research. The subjects were twenty eight Toba Batak people who live in Kampung Batak, Urung Kompas, Rantau Selatan district. The subjects were divided into two groups; first group as the second generation (parents) and the second group as third generation (children). The data were taken from the interview, questionnaire and observation. The findings show that (1) the level of mastery or maintenance of the Toba Batak language for the second generation is Severely Endangered at grade two. And the level of mastery or maintenance of the Toba Batak language for third generation or children is Critically Endangered at grade one. (2) the dominant domains are education domain and work place domain. (3) the reasons of Toba Batak language shift into Bahasa Indonesia; bilingualism factor, migration factor, economic factor, social factor, demographic factor, institutional factor, attitude factor, environment factor, status, and social success. Attitude is crucial factor influencing language shift. If the speaker has positive attitude about Toba Batak language, it can be maintain the Toba Batak language but if the speaker has negative attitude about Toba Batak language, the Toba Batak language can be extinct.

Abstract
The research was conducted investigated transitivity shift in Laskar Pelangi Novel. The Objective of the researcher was to find out types of transitivity shift used by Laskar Pelangi Novel. The researcher used transitivity of Halliday (1985) and transitivity shift of Calzada Perez (2007) as the tools of analysis. It can be seen that the transitivity shift occured in the speeches. The translators used more active clauses in the target text and use more than one processes in the clauses of the target text. The target texts are more understandable because it is explained clearer. From the findings about transitivity shift, it was found that the transitivity shifts happened in order to adapt the target language so that the translated text can be understood by the target audiences and it should be natural. The analysis shows that material process is dominantly used in the texts of Laskar Pelangi. And also find five transitivity shift like expansion, contraction, materialization, determaterialization and the different of material process. However, almost any decision in translation is consciously or unconsciously guided by translators background (point of view, ideology or cultural values). In conclusion, the translators tend to leave the reader in peace as much as possible by bringing the text as close as possible to the target text or home to the reader.

Abstract
ABSTRACT The aims of this study were to find out the types of translation interference in Indonesian version of Analisis Data Kualitatif Miles and Huberman (1994) from English into Indonesian. The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words,phrases and clauses thatwere translated from English as source language into Indonesian version as target language of Analisis Data Kualitatif MilesHuberman as the source of data. Then the data were analyzed by using translation interference based on Newmark (1988) which used to answer the research questions to find the type of translation interferences were used in Analisis Data Kualitatif Miles and Huberman (1994).The results of this study were found that there were three typesof translation interference used in the Analisis data Kualitatif Miles and Huberman namely syntactical, lexical and graphological.

Abstract
Translation of Cultural Terms in Mirah Of Banda Novel Nurfitriani Padang English Applied Linguistic Study Program State University of Medan Medan, Indonesia Padangfitri83@gmail.com This research, entitled Translation of cultural terms in Mirah of Banda novel , deals with the analysis of the translation of cultural terms in the novel. The main objectives of the study were to answer the research problems under study; which is to identify categories of cultural terms which found in the novel,Mirah of Banda . The data were collected from Mirah dari Banda , as the SL; and Mirah of Banda , as the TL, by applying documentation method of close-reading and note-taking technique. Then, the data was classified into some groups according to their categories and displayed in table. The data was descriptively analyzed based on theories from Newmark to find out the answer of the research problems. The result of the data analysis shows that There were six categories of cultural words in Mirah of Banda Novel namely (1) ecology (2) material culture, (3) social culture, (4) custom , concept,( 5) gestures and habits and (6) Indonesian metaphor and Indonesian metaphor was the new categories found besides the prior categories which is proposed by Newmark. In detail, it is dominated of ecology in 33.75 % (27 data), material culture 25.00 % (20 data), social culture 23.75 % (19 data), custom 6, 25 % (5 data), concept 6. 25 % (5 data),gestures and habits 1. 25 % (1 datum), and Indonesian Metaphor 3.75 % (3 data)

Abstract
This study identify the translation shift in the English version of the recitation of the holy book in Musabaqah Tafsir Quran. Qualitative research design was applied in this study. The data of the study were English text of English version of the Arabic version of the Holy Quran that was translated from Arabic into English by the participants of Musabaqah Tafsir Quran in National level of MTQ 2014 in Kepulauan Riau. The results showed that all kinds of category of shift occur in the English version of Musabaqah Tafsir Quran, they are: structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. In addition, there were some data categorized into double kinds of shift.

Abstract
The aims of this study were to find out the types and reasons of translation techniques applied in novel of The First Call From Heaven.The research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative design. The data of this study were words, phrases and clauses that were translated from English as source language into Indonesian version as target language of novel The First Call From Heaven as the source of data. Then the data of the study were analyzed by using translation techniques based on Molina and Albir (2002)which used to answer the questions number one. The results of this study were found that there were thirteen type sof translation techniques applied in the novel of The First Call From Heaven namely adaptation (5.47%),amplification (1.7%), borrowing (35.34%), description (0.2%),discursive creation (0.5%), establish equivalent (21.26%),linguistics amplification (3.73%),linguistics compression (2.29%),literal translation (2.58%), modulation (6.32%), particularization (0.2%), transposition (18.39%), editing technique (1.4%).

Abstract
This research aims to determine and examine the effect of managerial competence on principals performance and the effect of working motivation on principals performance, and find a model for developing principals performance. This research is using correlation research with an approach of ex-post facto research and held out in the state elementary schools of Medan. The populations of this research are all the school principals in the State Elementary School of Medan, consist of 383 principals. The samples of this research are 200 principal chosen with proportional random sampling technique. The final results of the research conclude that : the performance of state elementary school principals in Medan could be improved by increasing managerial competence, and work motivation.

Abstract
This research was conducted to investigate language style in classroom interaction. The objective of this research was to find out the types of language style used by teachers in classroom interaction. the subject of this research was three teachers who teach in the same class. The teachers utterances to students that occurred in classroom interaction were the data in this research. The researcher used descriptive qualitative method and used observation as the instrument to collecting data. the researcher used language style theory by Joos (1967) to indicates the types of language style used by teachers in classroom interaction. In this research, the researcher found that there were four types of language style used by teachers in classroom interaction, they were casual style as the most language style used by teachers (53,16%), followed by consultative style (32,11%), formal style (14,21%) and the last was intimate style (0,53%)

Abstract
Female prisoners in prisons are women who are perpetrators of crimes or crimes and how their life in prison is a social phenomenon that often occurs in the community, indicating that the "dignity and dignity" of women are much influenced by socio-economic abilities and human behavior. The lack of socio-economic conditions and thin potential of faith will be easy to carry out actions that deviate from religious norms, hence from the need to understand Character Education for female prisoners through Formal Socialization conducted by the Labuhanruku Penitentiary Institution. The purpose of this study is to find out and get an overview of the lives of female prisoners in the Labuhan Ruku Penitentiary. In this study it was descriptive qualitative using the Ethnographic approach. Data collection was done by in-depth interviews with observations. Furthermore, the data analysis technique is done by conducting interviews, and documentation. The results of this study can be seen that female prisoners in the Labuhan Ruku Penitentiary are motivated by the development and progress of the current era seems to be increasingly complex with various kinds of actions or criminal behavior, character education for female prisoners through formal socialization at Labuhanruku Penitentiary can change actions and the behavior of female prisoners is getting better and there are profound changes to the mental and psychological aspects of female prisoners in the institution.

Abstract
This paper identifies the types of code switching and the reason of using it in Kartini movie. Code switching can occur in conversation between speakers turns or within a single speakers turn. It can occur between sentences called intersentential or within a single sentence called intrasentential. Code switching can arise from individual choice or to be used as a major identity marker for a group of speakers who must deal with more than one language in their common pursuits. In this case, code switching happens in one local language during the conversation in Kartini movie. That is unggah ungguh Javanese language which is well known with its elaborate of speech level. This study used descriptive qualitative research. The data were collected by documentary technique and the instrument of data collection was recorder. It was found that intersentential switching is the most type of code switching in Kartini movie, while the reason to do that is as the ethnic identity marker.

Abstract
One of the competencies required from a teacher is how to create a Classroom Action Research (CAR). The problems faced by teachers in starting classroom action research are the inability of the teacher to formulate a problem statement and how to design a class action. This condition causes low learning outcomes obtained by students. In this study, the assignment, feedback and revision models (AFR) have been applied to improve the competence of teachers in developing CAR. The AFR model is implemented through workshop activities where the participants are a group of teachers. Each cycle in the CAR utilizes four phases of activities including planning, action, observing, and reflective. These stages continue until the problem is considered to have been resolved. After the workshop, teacher competence for cycle one was measured and found to be increase from 48.5 in the first lesson to 67.60 in the second lesson. Furthermore, it increased to 82.85 in the third lesson. For the cycle two obtained that the teacher competence to be increase from 52.89 for the first lesson to 71.94 in the second lesson and increase to be 86.57 in the third lesson. The teacher competence improvement also achieved on cycle three, where from 66.62 to 72.99 then to be 97.79 for thee first lesson, second lesson and third lesson respectively. The average increases of teacher competence for three cycles are 33.22%. Based on the results can be explained that the AFR workshop model, the teacher competence to create CAR is increasing.

Abstract
This research aims to (1) Analyze the value of character education in Sinar novel by Aguk Irawan Mizan, (2) Analyze internal conflict of the main figure in Sinar novel by Aguk Irawan Mizan, and (3) Know its usefulness as literary reading in senior high school. The type of this research is qualitative with descriptive method and researchers as instruments. The value of character education was analyzed with the provisions of National Education Ministry that is limited to religious values, hard work values, independence values, responsibility values, and social care values. Internal conflict was analyzed by Sigmund Freuds theory. The technique of collecting data using scrutinize and record, then analyzed using the Miles and Huberman models. Its usefulness as reading material is known through interviews with three Indonesian language teachers and questionnaires for 32 students in 4 Binjai Senior High School. Based on the research, be found 33 values of character education were obtained which included five religion values, four values of hard work, twelve values of independence, eight values of responsibility and four values of social care. Also besides, there are fifteen internal conflicts of the main characters in the novel. Based on the results of the interview was concluded that the reading material in the form of enrichment books based on this research was appropriate to be used as a companion learning book and it by following with the characteristics of senior high school students. The results of the questionnaire showed students responses to reading material is 82.2 percent with very good criteria.

Abstract
Women participation in the higher education of Indonesia has been increasing in the last decades though the gender inequality in the labour markets and public life is still considered as a major issue of the society. Aside from the fact, another form of gender inequality has been presumed to be more salience in the classrooms of universities across Indonesia. By taking a case amongst students in Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, Indonesia, the forms of gender inequality has been found in the different degrees of activities, participations and workloads between male and female students respectively. Female students seems to be more eagerly to actively participate in the classrroom activities thus situating them with more responsibilities to organise other students works/assignments and/or managing other non-academic and social matters of their class and cohort. Whilst male students, though seems less active in the classroom activities, are preferred to take more prominent roles in the leadership affairs including the student union of the department, of the faculty, and of the university. By examining the salient gender inequality in the university classrooms, it is expected to give sort of clues of the similar issue within the social life of the Indonesian society.

Abstract
Bargaining is a type of negotiation in which the buyer and seller of a good or service debate the price and exact nature of a transaction. If the bargaining produces agreement on terms, the transaction takes place where bargaining is an alternative pricing strategy to fixed prices. The people bargain by using polite language to get the lowest price. They have different ways in bargaining specially for women, they have good ability to play language while bargaining, they use politeness strategies in various way as Brown and Lavinson (1987: 101) proposed 4 strategies of politeness: Bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness and off record. This study is to investigate the politeness strategies used by women and describe how the politeness strategies are realized in bargaining. This study is descriptive as Bogdan and Biglen (1982:3) state that qualitative research is descriptive, so the data were interview transcript, personal documents, official records, field notes and the data are gathered by people engaging in natural behavior: talking, visiting, looking, eating and so on.
